Volunteer Opportunities From: Volunteer Peninsula

The Arc of Greater Williamsburg is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and has proudly served adults with developmental disabilities in our community since 1976. Our programs provide educational, health and wellness, life skills, cultural, social, and recreational enrichment. We provide 8-10 monthly activities to enhance clients' quality of life and reinforce their abilities.

A vital part of these programs is the provided round-trip transportation option for clients. This not only connects clients to social opportunities, but also allows much-needed respite time for families and caregivers.

We have a total of five vans/small buses that are used for this transportation. As each one is used multiple times per week, the interior is in need of cleaning and refreshing when we have the opportunity.

Our Day of Caring 2025 Request and Project is for 2-5 volunteers who would be willing to clean the van/bus interiors. This cleaning opportunity would include vacuuming, cleaning interior windows, wiping down interior walls, etc. and would require physical labor though each van is approximately 8' - 15' long.

Our needs are the following and available for adults over the age of 18.  We are looking for approximately 10 volunteers for the following. Bring your own tools if you have them as we are limited.

Want to make a difference for someone in our community? A local older adult in Hampton could use a hand with some yardwork—and they’d be so grateful for your help! They’d love to have flower beds weeded, a few new plants added, and fresh mulch put down. They also needs their lawn mowed and a few overgrown bushes trimmed. It’s a great way to spend some time outside and brighten someone’s day in a big way.

We are looking for 4 volunteers to write personalized thank you cards and make phone calls to thank our WALK to End Alzheimer's donors! We would provide the donor lists and all materials needed for this virtual project.

For Buildings 1 and 2 - Reinstall Soffit over entrance driveway, remove spider webs, pull weeds, clear bushes, remove dead limbs, clean gutters, trim limbs and bushes, remove deck storage and content, clean storage shed, remove old patio furniture, toys, pressure wash walk ways and remove shelving (additional items to be removed will be identified on the day of this event. 

We’re reaching out in hopes of finding a volunteer (or volunteer group) who may be willing to assist with some much-needed campus beautification. We currently need help with: Power washing five buildings on our campus (volunteer(s) with access to power washing equipment would be ideal).Weeding and cleaning our Survivors Garden in preparation for potential fall planting.If you or someone you know is handy, has equipment, or simply wants to give back, we’d love to hear from you! This is a wonderful opportunity to make a visible and meaningful impact on our space.

Join with like-minded ladies and gentlemen in the beautiful Hilton area of Newport News to make 3000 period packs! These period packs will be distributed to school nurses in approximately 300 elementary and middle schools all over Hampton Roads in the coming school years. Join us in erasing the shame and stigma of menstruation for this generation of students in Hampton Roads and beyond! 

Support Menchville House, a temporary emergency crisis shelter for families during Day of Caring on September 12th! Menchville House would love to receive support from an enthusiastic group of volunteers ready to clean up the surrounding property and organize within the shelter as needed. The projects may require lifting and moving a variety of objects, but nothing too heavy. We love to meet new people and look forward to welcoming a volunteer group during Day of Caring!

Volunteers in the ReStore handle a variety of duties, including customer service, furniture restoration, appliance & equipment repair and donation inventory & pricing. Volunteers need to be 16 and older and the experience can be great for seniors and their friends.

Help with landscaping and mulching the yard at our Veteran's Bridge Home. At this location, we provide short-term housing to homeless veterans until they are able to obtain their own permanent housing. Your support in maintaining the grounds will create a welcoming and supportive environment for our veterans.

By volunteering, you’ll be playing a vital role in supporting our mission to end homelessness and aid veterans in need. We greatly appreciate your time and dedication to these important tasks.

LINK of Hampton Roads needs your help with organizing the items in our storage barn. The barn is where we store several of our PORT Winter Shelter items, furniture and household items for those individuals exiting homeless into their own homes as well as other miscellaneous items. Your help in organizing these items will directly contribute to our ability to provide for those in need.

By volunteering, you’ll be playing a vital role in supporting our mission to end homelessness and aid veterans in need. We greatly appreciate your time and dedication to these important tasks.

Our Visitor Services team is preparing for a lobby remodeling project and could use a hand cleaning out their storage area, assembling shelves, merging and organizing supplies, decoration and materials. This is a capacity building project that would provide tremendous support for our staff during our Fall busy season. 

This is a great opportunity for a small group of 3-10 people that enjoying organizing, do not mind some physical work but would prefer to be indoors. 

The garden area in front of our Visitor Center needs beautification.  We will supply all needed hand tools.  Gloves and study shoes are recommended. 

Join us for a hands-on service project to help our community bloom! We're looking for 6–8 volunteers to assist with installing garden edging and weeding in our pollinator garden. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, work as a team, and support a space that helps our environment thrive. Gloves and comfortable attire are recommended. 

Volunteers for our weekly Bingo fundraisers help generate the funds for transportation for high school students with disabilities participating in supported workplace internships.

Volunteering will be at 12742 Nettles Drive Newport News, VA 23606. Volunteers are needed on Friday from 10 am - 2 pm.

We need support with updating the flowers surrounding the home and spreading new mulch for the beds to keep our community home - Hayes House looking beautiful all year round! 

We need help painting a wheelchair accessible ramp at our Saunders Community Living Home. 

We’re looking for volunteers to help with painting, organizing, and light decorating to create a fun, welcoming space for the children in our care. Whether you're great with a paintbrush or just want to lend a helping hand, we’d love your support!

We’re organizing a volunteer project to help beautify and maintain our community building. Volunteers will join together to pull weeds, clear overgrowth, and tidy up the surrounding grounds, making the space more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves, connect with neighbors, and take pride in keeping our shared spaces clean and inviting

We’re looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks, including indoor painting to help refresh our facility, outdoor clean-up such as picking up trash, pulling weeds, and tidying around trash bins, and supporting our neighbors by shopping alongside them in The Gathering Place. Additional opportunities include sorting items in our Clothing Closet, receiving and organizing incoming retail donations, helping with general indoor upkeep, and participating in our Supporting Our Seniors initiative by helping clean out a neighbor’s home. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with other tasks as needed.

We would like one team of 20 from 8-12 doing an outdoor service project in the park removing invasive plants with our park team. They will need to dress appropriately for outside; closed toed shoes, hat, sunscreen, bugspray, and a refillable water bottle. 

Our Experience Design team is seeking support in several project areas related to our outdoor living history buildings and material culture used to teach 17th century history to school groups and the visiting public at our museum- Jamestown Settlement. All of these projects have varying degrees difficulty ranging from painting and  running the power washer to replacing structural supports in buildings. We can adjust for the skill set of the group, break up into smaller groups, and will provide tools, materials and PPE. 

Support for these projects ensures the integrity of the material culture we use to bring history to life.  It also allows us to be good stewards of funds received through the proper care and preservation, we can expand the lifespan of the these buildings and objects for future generations of students and museum guests. 

·      Cannon restoration project to include power washing and painting cannon carriages

·       Waddle Fencing to include removal of old waddle and installation of new waddle

·       We have several posts that need to be replaced in the fort buildings

·       We have historic benches that will need legs installed

·       Help cut/manufacture 50 new outdoor wayfinding signs for our annual Military Through the Ages event. 

We’re looking to restore and revitalize three existing plant beds by removing overgrowth and preparing the area for new plantings. Volunteers will help clear the space and plant fall fruit trees, helping to beautify the grounds and support long-term sustainability efforts. This hands-on project is perfect for teams who enjoy outdoor work and making a visible impact in just one day!

Our campers and childcare kids love them, but after years of epic battles and nonstop fun, they’re in serious need of some TLC. At the very least, they could use a fresh coat of paint—but if we have a volunteer team with the right skills, a full rebuild would take them to the next level! Let’s give our kids the ultimate Gaga experience!

Volunteers work with infants and toddlers in one of CDR’s two child-care centers. As a child-care center volunteer, you will spend your time reading to children, rocking babies, helping with classroom and outdoor activities, and so much more.

CK provides supported, work-based, soft-skill building experiences to high school students with disabilities; we include direct, reliable and safe transportation for these students to ensure access to these opportunities. Our volunteer drivers are an integral part of building a more inclusive community on the Peninsula while supporting the growth and independence of our students during their internships. Even if you drive one student to or from work one day per week (i.e., one "run"), the benefits to the student are tremendous.

Are you... A survivor of postpartum depression, anxiety or other perinatal mood and anxiety disorder and want to provide help and hope to those going through a similar experience? Have you experienced an emotionally/mentally difficult time in your transition to parenthood? Personally touched by PMADs through witnessing a love one’s experience? Have professional experience working with perinatal population? Interested in broadening your life experiences? Wanting to give back to your community?

We rely extensively on a state-wide network of dedicated volunteers who are the backbone of the organization. Volunteers provide direct support to new mothers, parents and their families experiencing a difficult time in their lives AND provide behind-the-scenes support to PSVa in a variety of administrative duties. All volunteers have a positive impact on the lives of new and expectant mothers, parents and their families. PSVa volunteers provide direct peer and informational support to affected individuals and families, or administrative support to PSVa in fundraising, community education, event planning, or another role. There are volunteer opportunities that align with almost any skill set or interest. We are committed to creating volunteer experiences that serve both Virginia families and PSVa volunteers.

Through PSVa, you will find a dedicated, caring community of people who are working together to reduce the impact of perinatal mental health issues on families and communities in Virginia.

Postpartum Peer Mentors:

Establish a connection with the mentee; establish how they are doing right now; gather information; provide support and encouragement; provide resources; and follow up. (Provide weekly one-on-one support via phone, email, text, or in person for a minimum of 60 minutes.) Peer mentors need to have lived experience with a PMAD and you must be at least 9 months through your recovery. Support perinatal people who are struggling with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and be a part of the recovery and healing process. Personal and professional development-increased levels of empowerment, improved self-esteem, an increase in confidence and a renewed ability to cope with their own mental health.

Requirements: 1. Complete PSVa’s Volunteer Application process; 2. Complete PSVa’s Peer Mentor matching form, return calls and emails within 24-hours from mentees, provide notes to Peer Mentor Program Coordinator. 3. Review and sign the Volunteer Agreement. 4. Attend Peer Mentor Meetings and at least 3 virtual Volunteer meetings per year.

Purpose: LINK of Hampton Roads is seeking groups of volunteers for our PORT Winter Shelter. The shelter runs from November through March.

 Job Title: PORT Shelter Volunteer

Location: The Port Shelter Volunteers will work at rotating church locations in the Newport News area.

Key Responsibilities: The Port Shelter Volunteer Group will assist guests with checking in. They will assist the churches on an as needed basis for duties such as cleaning or cooking meals for the guests. 

Reports to: The PORT Shelter Manager, the Executive Director and the Church Site Manager 

Time Commitment: 2 - 4 hours per night ideally. Hours may vary by site. Shelter is open 7 days a week. Unlimited hours available

Qualifications: Volunteers must be able to move freely and without assistance. May be required to move chairs, tables. Must be 18+ and able to handle working with persons with mental illness, physical disabilities and possible substance abuse. 

Support Provided: Deputies and nurses on site for full duration of shelter. Experienced church volunteers, intake workers and social services workers on site.

We are looking for people/groups to provide meals at our Day Center for those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. We have multiple days a month available to choose from. Meals are served at 12pm M-F. Sign up can be fore one meal a month, one a week, or a single occurrence. Food prep, cooking, and clean up are requested. Meal choice is up to the individual and can be prepared onsite or off and brought in. Meals ordered from restaurants are also accepted. If interested please email us with possible dates. 

Our children are super busy! While teachers do a great job sanitizing materials as needed, there's always a great need to give classrooms deep cleaning. This could include bins of toys, shelving, tables, and/or chairs.

Period pack delivery volunteers are needed to get period packs to local schools! Thanks to our partnerships with our public schools in Hampton Roads and beyond and our AMAZING VOLUNTEERS, we've delivered over 7000 period packs to over 300 schools! It's easy to help - just let us know the area you want to help in! You can either help us move supplies/ period packs around the Hampton Roads area, or take completed period packs to the school board office / other central location pre-arranged with the school system.

Your help provides hope. Food donations help maintain our inventory to ensure that we are able to serve our community when unexpected hardships occur for families, seniors, individuals and veterans.

Through YouGiveGoods and on-line retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Costco, etc. you can host a virtual food drive or ship items directly to our doors at 2401 Aluminum Avenue, Hampton, VA 23661. As always you can drop items off at our location on the side of the building.

Volunteers play an integral role in helping the Foodbank fulfill its mission to minimize hunger across the greater Peninsula.  Volunteers are needed at the Foodbank's facility to:

- help sort and inspect non-perishable food items

- stock the shelves with non-perishable food items

- pack bags of non-perishable food items for several of the Foodbank's outreach programs

Individuals and groups are welcomed.

The warehouse is not temperature controlled.  Standing, and some minimal lifting required. 

Age Requirement: 12 years old with an adults, 15 and above can volunteer on their own.

Closed toed shoes required.

Do you enjoy talking with people, either on the phone or in person? The Caring Neighbors Program needs you!

As a Caring Neighbors Volunteer, you can make friendly visits or check-in phone calls to older adults and adults with disabilities. You'll make new friends, and help reduce social isolation and loneliness for the people you meet.

Friendly visits are usually made during business hours, Monday - Friday. Safety check-in calls can be made any time that is mutually agreeable to the volunteer and client.

Volunteers can commit to as little as 1-2 hours per month, or more as you are available! Must be 18 years old and pass a background check. Clients are located in Newport News and Hampton.

Grove Christian Outreach Center is seeking english/spanish translators to assist our intake specialist and other volunteers adequately serve our non-english speaking families. Translation would ensure we are communicating effectively with our neighbors to provide details about food, clothing, financial assistance and social well-being programs they are eligible to participate in as residents of Greater Williamsburg. The translator will also help us receive requests and information for our intake process.

Food Pantry: at THRIVE, our food pantry is called The Market. It looks and feels like a grocery store in order to create dignifying experience for families in crisis. We are seeking greeters who can welcome families to The Market and assist them with shopping, as needed

Scheduling/Intake: we receive dozens of calls from families seeking services. We need people who are able to return calls and book them for appointments

Financial Coaching: do you have a passion for budgeting and a compassionate heart? We are seeking people who are willing to take a 20-hour training to become financial coaches. You will work directly with families in crisis to connect them to local resources and help connect them to financial tools

Come join our outstanding volunteer team!  Community volunteers are needed to deliver noontime meals to homebound seniors in Hampton, Newport News, and Poquoson, VA. Delivery takes approximately one hour and complete route directions are provided each day. Volunteers can commit to only to the day(s) that they wish, either once a week, every other week, etc. Individuals can volunteer individually or with a group. Help ensure that no senior goes hungry!  Great way to make new friends!

Ensure clients are cleaning up after themselves and acting in a respectful manner while in the kitchen and refreshment cafe areas. Light cleaning and serving may also be done. 

Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency (WJCC-CAA) is seeking individuals to serve as a volunteer receptionist at our administrative office. Successful applicants will display excellent customer service, word processing and telephone etiquette skills.

Salvation Army of Williamsburg is in need of volunteers to help with our Monthly Mobile Food Pantry/ Distribution.

The event happens every third Thursday of the month and takes place between from 2pm to 4:00pm. We do ask volunteers to arrive around 1pm for set up and volunteer group meeting. We also need individuals who can lift up to 50 pounds. Duties include packing food items, lifting food boxes into people's vehicles, and registering people for the food. The Richard F Clark HELP Clinic provides low cost dental healthcare to individuals in the Hampton community who are uninsured and have incomes at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (a family with 2 children making less than $50,000/yr).

We are looking for dentists and dental hygienists who would be willing to give some time to help provide excellent oral healthcare to our patients. We are always working to expand the number of people we reach and always need more providers to help us keep our costs as low as possible! After completing an orientation and interview, a volunteer Big is matched to a Little. Together, the match explores their shared interests by engaging with the community around them. Maybe you'll go bike riding, or hiking, or you'll explore new recipes together. Maybe you'll teach your Little to create a budget by doing groceries together, or maybe you'll share your love of animals by volunteering at an animal shelter. Each match is unique and we work to make strong, long-lasting, professionally supported matches.

Matches meet about 2-3 times per month, for at least one year. As a Big, you will work closely with your BBBS Match Support Specialist who is there to support you along your match.

BBBS will match Bigs and Littles in close proximity throughout Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown, Williamsburg and surrounding communities.

The Williamsburg Botanical Garden and Freedom Park Arboretum always needs volunteers for physical work in the Garden of course, but there are many opportunities for volunteers that don't involve digging in the soil!

We're in need of volunteers interested in our Hospital Accompaniment (HA) program. As an HA advocate, volunteers act as on-call companions for domestic and sexual violence survivors that arrive at hospitals with which Avalon collaborates.

Position would require a time commitment for weekday/end shifts, and volunteers receive extensive training before shift assignment, as well as being subject to a background check. Shifts last anywhere from 16hrs on a week day to 24hrs on a weekend day and while the volunteer may not respond to a call for the entire 16/24hr shift duration, volunteers are expected to be available to respond to a call during their scheduled shift.

If you're looking for a way to safely make an impact on a local senior's life, we've got just the opportunity for you. We're currently in need of additional volunteer drivers to help transport seniors from their door to their medical appointments. Volunteering as a driver requires calling the senior beforehand to arrange a pick up time, showing up at their home at the arranged time, and safely transporting them to their appointment. While they are in their appointment, the driver will wait and then safely transport them home.

Transportation is provided with the safety and health of our seniors and volunteers in mind. Each person wears a mask for the duration of the ride and we ask that the senior sit in the backseat on the passenger side to maintain as much distance as possible. If there is a need for physical assistance helping the senior get in or out of the car, we do our best to make that known ahead of time.
