The Clothing Closet Volunteer supports the day center by helping organize, maintain, and distribute donated clothing to individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers provide compassionate customer service, assist participants in selecting clothing that meets their needs, and help ensure the clothing closet remains clean, organized, and welcoming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Welcome participants and assist them in accessing clothing in a respectful and dignified manner.
- Help individuals select appropriate clothing, shoes, outerwear, and seasonal items.
- Sort, inspect, and organize donated clothing by size, gender, type, and season.
- Remove damaged, stained, or unusable items from inventory.
- Restock shelves, racks, and storage areas as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clothing closet.
- Track clothing distribution and inventory according to agency procedures.
- Assist with accepting, sorting, and processing clothing donations.
- Notify staff when inventory is low or specific items are needed.
- Follow all agency safety, confidentiality, and volunteer policies.
- Treat all participants with kindness, respect, and without judgment.
- Perform other volunteer duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Dependable, punctual, and able to commit to scheduled volunteer shifts.
- Friendly, respectful, and comfortable interacting with diverse populations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Previous customer service or retail experience is helpful but not required.

- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, and lift clothing bags or boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to sort, fold, and hang clothing throughout the volunteer shift.
