Overview of Opportunity:
One of our most important programs is our A Night’s Welcome Winter Shelter program. This is a thermal shelter that runs for at least 21 weeks throughout the winter months and requires thousands of hours of volunteer time from our community. The Winter Shelter Check-In Team member will oversee the shelter process on a given night and will be responsible for making any necessary decisions and will help other volunteers know what to do and how to respond to events and questions from shelter guests.
Time Commitment Needed:
One evening a week for 20 weeks, starting November 1 and ending March 20 (We prefer Team Members be available every week or at least 17 of 20 weeks)
Time on Site: 5 PM to 9 PM
At least 1 different training session (1 hour each; scheduled prior to the start of shelter season)
Log hours: Please log your hours in the volunteer sign-in tablet, located on-site. Additional log in sheets required for various programs (Probation, View, Community Service) are the responsibility of the volunteer.
What We Need You To Do:
We will need Welcome Team Member to manage volunteers and clients through the shelter check-in, supply provision, meal, and bedding process. The Team Member will be the point of contact for HELP staff as well as for on-site volunteers.
Skills Needed To Accomplish This Job:
A strong knowledge of winter shelter policies and procedures
The ability to maintain a level head in the midst of heated emotions among other volunteers or guests
Data processing and standard computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Email, Windows operation)
Strong leadership skills to help direct volunteers and guests to ensure a smooth shelter experience
Ability to act in accordance with HELP’s mission and values, especially maintaining human dignity in all interactions with guests and volunteers
How this helps us achieve our mission:
With a small staff, it’s impossible for our own staff to be present at the shelter the entire time it’s open. Having strong volunteers who can serve our core mission of ensuring access to shelter and basic human services while also upholding our values multiplies our impact and workforce.
