Help us provide nutritious food directly to older adults in our community! During our Senior Living Food Distribution at the Paula Maria Complex, volunteers will travel to the senior living community to assist with distributing pre-packed food boxes and other nutritious food items to senior residents.

Volunteers Tasks May Include:

This opportunity offers a meaningful way to connect with our senior neighbors while helping ensure they have access to healthy food. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, as this opportunity takes place outdoors rain or shine and involves standing, walking, and lifting food boxes weighing up to approximately 25 pounds. Every box distributed helps support older adults throughout the Peninsula, making a lasting impact in the lives of our neighbors.

General landscaping, trimming, weeding, etc

These projects would make a significant difference in the appearance, safety, and overall upkeep of our property. We typically have projects that can be tailored to groups of approximately 8–10 volunteers.

Access to nutritious food should never depend on where someone lives, their age, or their ability to travel. Every box packed helps provide nutritious food to neighbors across the Virginia Peninsula. As a Box Packing Assembly Line volunteer, you will work alongside a team of volunteers to prepare nonperishable and nutritious food boxes for distribution through our Mobile Food Pantry and Senior Distribution programs. These boxes help ensure that individuals, families, and older adults have access to the food they need.

This role requires standing for the duration of the shift and may involve lifting up to 25 pounds. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing suitable for a warehouse environment and closed-toe shoes are required.

We’re excited to welcome United Way’s Day of Caring volunteers to Camp Skimino on September 18 for a hands‑on project that keeps camp beautiful, safe, and ready for every girl’s next adventure.

Help THRIVE prepare for our holiday season fundraiser by assisting with our Let Christmas THRIVE mailing. This annual initiative raises funds to provide gift cards to families who received financial assistance through THRIVE this past year.

Volunteers will organize materials, stuff envelopes, and prepare mailings to connect our community with ways to support local families this holiday season. 

Volunteers needed: 3-6 people.

Support families experiencing hardship in our free grocery store by volunteering in The Market at THRIVE from 12:30-3:00pm. Volunteers will be stationed throughout The Market to assist families as they shop for groceries, helping create a welcoming and dignifying experience. 

Most volunteer tasks require standing for long periods.

Serve at Grove Christian Outreach Center on September 18th, 2026 for the annual Day of Caring! Projects will include brush clearing, shed organization, stocking and cleaning in The Gathering Place, GCOC's free grocery market, cleaning GCOC's vehicles, and supply inventory! Help prepare fresh produce for distribution by sorting and bagging fruits and vegetables for our neighbors. Volunteers will work together to create ready-to-distribute produce bags that help provide healthy food to individuals and families throughout our community.

Tasks will include:

Help us breathe new life into one of the Victory Family YMCA’s most-used outdoor gathering spaces! Volunteers will work together to refresh the pavilion with a fresh coat of paint and install new ceiling fans with integrated lighting, creating a more comfortable, inviting, and functional environment for members, families, and community events. This project will enhance both the appearance and usability of the space, making it a welcoming destination for year-round programs and activities.

From painting and beautification to improving comfort and visibility, every volunteer contribution will help create a lasting improvement that benefits the entire community.

Help us share our gratitude! Join Big Brothers Big Sisters for a card-writing session as we create handwritten thank-you notes for the volunteers, donors, and community partners who make our mission possible. We'll provide donuts, coffee, and card-writing materials! This is a simple, meaningful way to make a difference and help recognize those who support local youth.

Pack a box, support a mom, welcome a baby. Join us in assembling "Baby Boxes" packed with essentials for local newborns and new mothers. Your hands-on help will directly support families navigating the first weeks of parenthood, with boxes distributed right here in our community through Sentara Regional Medical Center and the HOPE Pregnancy Center.

This Day of Caring project will be at our warehouse located at 309 McLaws Circle, Suite G

Volunteers Needed to Help Distribute Food at Mobile Pantry Food Distributions 

Mobile Food Pantries are a way to distribute much needed nutritious food to members of our community who need it the most, children, seniors, veterans, and hardworking individuals.

The volunteer(s) meet the Foodbank's representative at the designated apartment complex/site at the predetermined time.  Volunteers are asked to help unload the food from the Foodbank truck and assist with setting up a distribution center inside or outside the designated space. The Distribution could take place inside a community room or outside in a parking lot.

If there are frozen items, volunteers will pack them at this time.  Once the set-up is complete, the distribution will begin. Some of the residents may need assistance getting their packages to their front door or to their cars. 

This need varies from site to site.

The food distributions occur:

- Various times Monday - Friday between 9:00am-4:00pm for 2.5 to 3 hours

After the distribution is complete, there is some clean up that we ask the volunteers to help with.

Some standing and lifting is required.

These events occur rain or shine.

As a service to our clients and their caregivers, The Arc provides door-to-door transportation on our five vans. Each Day of Caring, we invite groups to register to provide interior cleaning on each of our vans. This service is extremely appreciated by our clients and our organization, and helps keep them in impeccable shape to continue serving our deserving clientele! 

Cleaning consists of vacuuming, wiping seats, cleaning windows, sweeping, etc. and does require walking up a few steps and bending down under seats occasionally. Thanks so much for your consideration. 

The Arc of Greater Williamsburg has proudly served adults with developmental disabilities in our community since 1976. Our programs provide educational, health and wellness, life skills, cultural, social, and recreational enrichment. In addition, we provide much-needed respite time for families and caregivers.

Support the upkeep of the facility by assisting with indoor and outdoor maintenance projects. Volunteers will clean windows inside and out, complete general building clean-up, move furniture as needed, build steps for the shed, and install lattice on the shed. These improvements will help create a cleaner, more welcoming, and functional environment for staff, clients, and visitors.

The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s Community Pantry, operated in partnership with Sentara Healthcare, serves neighbors with fresh, nourishing food while also connecting them to vital health and wellness resources. Often referred to as a Food Pharmacy, the pantry offers nutritious food options that support individuals and families in managing health conditions and improving overall well-being.

As a Shopping Assistant, volunteers work directly with neighbors during their scheduled pantry appointments. The pantry is set up like a grocery store, allowing neighbors in need to select foods based on posted quantities.  Volunteer responsibilities may include:

Volunteers should be comfortable walking, standing, and engaging with neighbors in a compassionate and supportive manner.

We are looking for strong folks to help us move some boxes into storage and get some filing cabinets and office supplies stored. 

Help enhance the outdoor spaces by tackling a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance projects. Volunteers will spread mulch, trim tree limbs, pull weeds, clean up the playground, aerate and seed lawn areas, and help remove trash and debris by taking it to the dumpster. These projects will improve the safety, appearance, and usability of the property for everyone who visits.

Volunteers needed for general ground maintenance on several Hampton Virginia properties that will require vine removal from fencing, bush and hedge trimming or removal, and tree pruning. Tools, supplies, snacks, and water will be provided.

The Kitchen Monitor Volunteer helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming kitchen and refreshment area for individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers prepare and replenish coffee, beverages, and snacks, monitor kitchen and dining areas, maintain sanitation standards, and provide friendly, respectful assistance to day center participants.

The Clothing Closet Volunteer supports the day center by helping organize, maintain, and distribute donated clothing to individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers provide compassionate customer service, assist participants in selecting clothing that meets their needs, and help ensure the clothing closet remains clean, organized, and welcoming.

At HELP, we meet people in their hour of greatest need—people who are homeless, who are hungry, who are hurt, who are at the fringes of society—people who need their faith and dignity restored. We provide faith based services to help those who are struggling with the help the so very need. We provide day support services (showers, laundry, mailing address, vital records, and housing focused case management), thermal shelter, and year round shelter for single women with children. 

We are currently seeking a volunteer Data Specialist to help us better organize, analyze, and use our data to strengthen programs, improve reporting, and support grant and fundraising efforts. This role would have a meaningful impact by helping us make data-driven decisions that directly support the people we serve.

Key areas of support may include:

Organizing and cleaning program or client data

Creating basic reports or dashboards

Supporting data tracking for outcomes and grants

Advising on data best practices and tools

Fight local hunger and launch a PORCH chapter in Hampton by hosting monthly neighborhood food drives. PORCH provides training, tools, and ongoing support.

Administrative Hospice Volunteers provide office and clerical support to help hospice staff deliver compassionate care to patients and families. Responsibilities may include answering phones, filing and organizing documents, assembling admission packets, data entry, preparing mailings, making copies, and assisting with special projects as needed.

Substitute drivers are needed to support morning grocery store pick ups or weekly grocery home deliveries. Truck or SUV recommended for grocery store pick ups. Any vehicle size welcome for home deliveries. Must be able to lift 15-25 pounds.

Volunteers will sort and shelve frozen items, rotate inventory, and ensure products are easy to find for Market operations. Must be comfortable working in cold temperatures and able to lift up to 25 lbs.

Youth Mentor – Colonial CASA

Colonial CASA is seeking dedicated, compassionate adults to serve as Youth Mentors and make a meaningful difference in the life of a young person in our community. Mentors provide consistent support, encouragement, and positive role modeling through structured, in-person interactions.

Mentor Requirements:

Mentors meet with their assigned youth 4 hours a month to build trust, set goals, explore interests, and provide guidance. Consistency and reliability are essential, as many youths benefit greatly from having a stable, supportive adult presence in their lives.

Help us help our community stay healthy. We need volunteers to help organize and fundraise, or provide outreach for various events throughout the year. The time commitment is sporadic depending on what upcoming events there are.

Are you fluent in conversational Spanish? We need volunteer interpreters to help provide clarity to instructions to our patients in a variety of areas. You could be needed to return phone messages, call patients for appointment reminders, sit with a patient during a visit to ensure proper communication between provider and patient.

Sports Buddies is a way to mentor a child between the ages of 6-13 in a group setting. Sports Buddies meet at a location designated by Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sports Buddies meet 1 Saturday out of the month for 2 hours. Meetings usually occur every 3rd Saturday of the month. The next session is from March 2026-August 2026.

We are in immediatete need of a part time front desk receptionist to help greet client and donors as they arrive, answer phone calls/take messages, help with donations and around the office as needed.

We are accepting all non-perishable food items as well as meats, hygiene items, and diapers/baby wipes. We are depending on your generosity so that we can continue to help those families most in need.

Volunteers work with infants and toddlers in one of CDR’s two child-care centers. As a child-care center volunteer, you will spend your time reading to children, rocking babies, helping with classroom and outdoor activities, and so much more.

CK provides supported, work-based, soft-skill building experiences to high school students with disabilities; we include direct, reliable and safe transportation for these students to ensure access to these opportunities. Our volunteer drivers are an integral part of building a more inclusive community on the Peninsula while supporting the growth and independence of our students during their internships. Even if you drive one student to or from work one day per week (i.e., one "run"), the benefits to the student are tremendous.

Have you experienced an emotionally/mentally difficult time in your transition to parenthood? Personally touched by PMADs through witnessing a love one’s experience? Have professional experience working with perinatal population? Interested in broadening your life experiences? Wanting to give back to your community?

We rely extensively on a state-wide network of dedicated volunteers who are the backbone of the organization. Volunteers provide direct support to new mothers, parents and their families experiencing a difficult time in their lives AND provide behind-the-scenes support to PSVa in a variety of administrative duties. All volunteers have a positive impact on the lives of new and expectant mothers, parents and their families. PSVa volunteers provide direct peer and informational support to affected individuals and families, or administrative support to PSVa in fundraising, community education, event planning, or another role. There are volunteer opportunities that align with almost any skill set or interest. We are committed to creating volunteer experiences that serve both Virginia families and PSVa volunteers.

Through PSVa, you will find a dedicated, caring community of people who are working together to reduce the impact of perinatal mental health issues on families and communities in Virginia.

Postpartum Peer Mentors:

Establish a connection with the mentee; establish how they are doing right now; gather information; provide support and encouragement; provide resources; and follow up. (Provide weekly one-on-one support via phone, email, text, or in person for a minimum of 60 minutes.) Peer mentors need to have lived experience with a PMAD and you must be at least 9 months through your recovery. Support perinatal people who are struggling with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and be a part of the recovery and healing process. Personal and professional development-increased levels of empowerment, improved self-esteem, an increase in confidence and a renewed ability to cope with their own mental health.

Requirements: 1. Complete PSVa’s Volunteer Application process; 2. Complete PSVa’s Peer Mentor matching form, return calls and emails within 24-hours from mentees, provide notes to Peer Mentor Program Coordinator. 3. Review and sign the Volunteer Agreement. 4. Attend Peer Mentor Meetings and at least 3 virtual Volunteer meetings per year.

We're seeking volunteers in Hampton to tutor adult learners in reading, writing, math, English language, computer skills, workforce prep, and more. No teaching experience or second language is required—just a commitment, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference.

Where? Pairs meet at a mutually convenient public location or online. Locations include the Literacy for Life offices along with libraries, churches, and other community spaces.

How? We equip you to succeed! Tutors complete a New Tutor Training series, then receive ongoing support through individual consultation, in-service workshops, a resource library, and referral to online resources. Staff recommend appropriate teaching materials based on the learner’s skills and goals.

Purpose: LINK of Hampton Roads is seeking groups of volunteers for our PORT Winter Shelter. The shelter runs from November through March.

 Job Title: PORT Shelter Volunteer

Location: The Port Shelter Volunteers will work at rotating church locations in the Newport News area.

Key Responsibilities: The Port Shelter Volunteer Group will assist guests with checking in. They will assist the churches on an as needed basis for duties such as cleaning or cooking meals for the guests. 

Reports to: The PORT Shelter Manager, the Executive Director and the Church Site Manager 

Time Commitment: 2 - 4 hours per night ideally. Hours may vary by site. Shelter is open 7 days a week. Unlimited hours available

Qualifications: Volunteers must be able to move freely and without assistance. May be required to move chairs, tables. Must be 18+ and able to handle working with persons with mental illness, physical disabilities and possible substance abuse.

Thanks to our partnerships with our public schools in Hampton Roads and beyond and our AMAZING VOLUNTEERS, we've delivered over 7000 period packs to over 300 schools! It's easy to help - just let us know the area you want to help in! You can either help us move supplies/ period packs around the Hampton Roads area, or take completed period packs to the school board office / other central location pre-arranged with the school system.

Grove Christian Outreach Center is seeking english/spanish translators to assist our intake specialist and other volunteers adequately serve our non-english speaking families. Translation would ensure we are communicating effectively with our neighbors to provide details about food, clothing, financial assistance and social well-being programs they are eligible to participate in as residents of Greater Williamsburg. The translator will also help us receive requests and information for our intake process.

Salvation Army of Williamsburg is in need of volunteers to help with our Monthly Mobile Food Pantry/ Distribution.

The Richard F Clark HELP Clinic provides low cost dental healthcare to individuals in the Hampton community who are uninsured and have incomes at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (a family with 2 children making less than $50,000/yr).

After completing an orientation and interview, a volunteer Big is matched to a Little. Together, the match explores their shared interests by engaging with the community around them. Maybe you'll go bike riding, or hiking, or you'll explore new recipes together. Maybe you'll teach your Little to create a budget by doing groceries together, or maybe you'll share your love of animals by volunteering at an animal shelter. Each match is unique and we work to make strong, long-lasting, professionally supported matches.

Matches meet about 2-3 times per month, for at least one year. As a Big, you will work closely with your BBBS Match Support Specialist who is there to support you along your match.

BBBS will match Bigs and Littles in close proximity throughout Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown, Williamsburg and surrounding communities.

We're in need of volunteers interested in our Hospital Accompaniment (HA) program. As an HA advocate, volunteers act as on-call companions for domestic and sexual violence survivors that arrive at hospitals with which Avalon collaborates.

Position would require a time commitment for weekday/end shifts, and volunteers receive extensive training before shift assignment, as well as being subject to a background check. Shifts last anywhere from 16hrs on a week day to 24hrs on a weekend day and while the volunteer may not respond to a call for the entire 16/24hr shift duration, volunteers are expected to be available to respond to a call during their scheduled shift.

If you're looking for a way to safely make an impact on a local senior's life, we've got just the opportunity for you. We're currently in need of additional volunteer drivers to help transport seniors from their door to their medical appointments. Volunteering as a driver requires calling the senior beforehand to arrange a pick up time, showing up at their home at the arranged time, and safely transporting them to their appointment. While they are in their appointment, the driver will wait and then safely transport them home.

Transportation is provided with the safety and health of our seniors and volunteers in mind. Each person wears a mask for the duration of the ride and we ask that the senior sit in the backseat on the passenger side to maintain as much distance as possible. If there is a need for physical assistance helping the senior get in or out of the car, we do our best to make that known ahead of time.

A CASA is a professionally trained volunteer appointed by the Juvenile Court to advocate for the best interest of children who have been abused and/or neglected. By working alongside attorneys, social workers and other professionals, CASAs expedite permanency ensuring that children do not linger in the foster care system. We are looking for a volunteer(s) who know their way around a tool kit and can do general maintenance!  Whether it's fixing a broken door, leaky faucet or putting together a desk and chairs, we would appreciate having you on our team.

Meet with our wish kids to discover and help fulfill their wish and leave their family with a lasting, memorable experience. Wish granters work in teams of two and meet directly with the wish child and their families. The volunteer team interviews the wish child in order to get to the heart of the wish. Wish granters enhance the wish experience by throwing wish parties, helping with shopping sprees, attending celebrity meet and greets, and more. This is a long term volunteer opportunity and training is required. The time required each month varies, but most wishes average two to four hours a month. You must submit a background check.
