Who We Are
Peake Childhood Center (formally Downtown Hampton Child Development Center)
Peake Childhood Center prepares children for success, both in school and in life. The first five years are a critical window of opportunity for a child's development; a time where you can either maximize their potential, or waste it. Everything we do in our program, from newborns to rising kindergarteners, is designed to optimize the child's development. This includes social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills.
Our program is nationally accredited by NAEYC
At Peake Childhood Center, children learn through play. There are no worksheets or coloring books. Art is open-ended, and learning is hands-on. Countless studies have proven the success rates for this style of teaching, and our children's success rates when then enter school exemplifies those statistics.
We employ only experienced and degree holding teachers. Strong, positive relationships between teachers and children are a key component of our success rates, and our teachers undergo continued education throughout the year to both maintain and improve their skills.
Children who attend quality preschool programs of our level are consistently shown to have:
HIGHER RATES OF
- high school graduation
- college graduation
- employment
- healthy families
LOWER RATES OF
- dropping out
- remedial education
- teen parenthood
- welfare dependency
What We Do
Peake is an innovative child care center and preschool.
We make quality child care affordable, through the Peninsula's only sliding-scale tuition rate open to the public. That means there are no qualifications to enter our program, and families pay based on their income level and need.
Over 75% of our children come from low-income families, and many have additional risk factors such as an incarcerated parent or developmental delays. We serve nearly 200 children, offering all-day, year-round care. A healthy breakfast, lunch and snack are included, which is vital because for some children, these are the only good meals (and sometimes, the only meals at all) they receive during the week.
Our children range in age from 6 weeks to 5 years.
