Who We Are

Preparing students for success in the 21st Century Workplace is a top priority of Newport News Public Schools.  In elementary school, the focus is on Career Awareness.  Students learn about the wide range of available careers through career fairs, career speakers, and cross-curricular career lessons and projects.  In middle school, the focus shifts to Career Exploration.  Middle school students learn about careers through field trips, career days, Career Pathways breakfasts, business partnerships, and select job shadowing experiences.  In high school, students are encouraged to take advantage of Opportunities to experience the world of work.  Students engage in paid and unpaid internships, job shadowing experiences, Career Pathways breakfasts, and specialty programs such as Early Career and the Engineering Shipbuilding Internship Program (eSHIP).  Providing ample opportunities for students to develop Career Readiness Skills is one of many ways Newport News Public Schools educators prepare students to graduate College, Career, and Citizen Ready.

What We Do

"Career Pathways" is a way of learning about careers in Newport News Public Schools. The Career Pathways way of learning is now in every school, so all students will leave our school division equipped with the skills and a clear understanding of the pathway to success in their chosen career.

Pathways are comprised of interrelated courses, as well as curricular, extra-curricular, and service learning experiences. NNPS has selected individual career pathways based upon local market needs in the Hampton Roads area and student interests.
