Who We Are

The City of Newport News Department of Human Services is a local Human Services agency that strives to provide responsive and excellent customer service to contribute to the quality of life in Newport News through caring, commitment, and collaboration.

What We Do

We provide a broad range of services and programs that empower residents to maintain safe, healthy, and independent lives, as well as assistance through difficult and emergency situations. These include, but are not limited to:

Benefit Programs
Information for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP), Medicaid, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance and Emergency Assistance.

Adult & Family Services
Child Welfare Services, Child Care Assistance, Child Protective Services, Foster Care, Adoption, Services for Senior and Disabled Adults, and Adult Protective Services.

Prevention & Self-Sufficiency Services
Home Visiting Programs, Youth Services, Parenting Programs, Employment Services, Virginia Initiative for Education and Work (VIEW), SNAP Employment and Training (SNAPET).

Services for the Homeless
Housing assistance, case management services, employment assistance, personal hygiene facilities and referrals to available assistance in the community.
