Who We Are

What the American Diabetes Association Does In Virginia

  • ADA currently funds more than $5 million in grants in Virginia to further diabetes research studies for improved treatments and the cure for the disease.
  • ADA supports a national call center (1-800-DIABETES) and an internationally recognized website (www.diabetes.org) that is available to Virginiaresidents for the latest in diabetes information and educational materials.
  • ADA’s area offices host several fundraising and awareness events each year, including Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, the Tour de Cure cycling event, annual Garden Party Gala, and the Mark Luczak/Hilda Vazquez Memorial Golf Tournament.  Call 1-888-DIABETES or 757-424-6662 to become involved with one of these worthwhile projects!
  • ADA’s program manager oversees the Live Empowered African American Program, which includes Diabetes Day, Project POWER, and “Choose to Live” activities.  An annual Victory over Diabetes program, scheduled for late October, will lead into November, American Diabetes Month.  This program promotes diabetes awareness, detection and care among at-risk populations.
  • ADA supports and promotes other program efforts, including a youth initiative to assist children diagnosed with diabetes.  Family Link, a program for children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their families, offers educational and social opportunities to area families affected by diabetes.
  • ADA fights to support the rights of people with diabetes in Virginia and around the nation through grassroots advocacy efforts.  Join us as an ADAadvocate!
  • ADA supports local offices in Chesapeakeand Richmond, with goals to further the national mission while promoting diabetes awareness, prevention and care throughout local communities.
  • Seventy-eight percent (78%) of every dollar raised by ADA nationwide goes directly to mission-based activity (research, information/education, advocacy and public awareness).
