Elmerton cemetery is an old African American cemetery that has been neglected over the years. It is the resting place of Mary Peake as well as many veterans. Mary Peake was the first black teacher hired by the American Missionary Association, to teach children of former slaves.
This cemetery is not maintained by the city and the family who owned it is long gone. We maintain it as a way to honor those who served in the military as well as Mary Peake. It also shows those who do visit that others care.
